eXtreme Group
Overview
A group for children & young people with SEND who live or access services in County Durham. The group is open to everyone who identifies as having a special education need or disability. No diagnosis is needed.
The group meet regularly to discuss issues that are important to them and topics set by Local Authority, NHS & national consultations. Young people have provided their opinions on matters such as:
- Transport
- Leisure facilities
- Education
- EHCP’s
- Inclusion
- Local strategies

Impact
Your Autism was created by young people who recognised a growing concern about the myths surrounding autism and the lack of clear, supportive information available to families following a diagnosis.
Between April 2025 and April 2026, the website has reached an incredible milestone of over 26,000 views, demonstrating the need for accessible, authentic information shaped by lived experience.
The project provides meaningful opportunities for young people to engage in a variety of external meetings and events, including:
- MCT Conferences
- NHS Conferences – including contributions to The Language of Autism project
- DCC Interviews
- Ambitious About Inclusion in the North East
Through these experiences, young people build confidence, self-worth, and a sense of purpose. More importantly, they are given a platform to ensure their voices are heard — and responded to — in real time.
The involvement of young people has a powerful impact not only on their own development, but also on the professionals and organisations they engage with. By sharing their lived experiences, they help shape understanding, challenge misconceptions, and influence more inclusive practices.
Feedback from professionals at these events is consistently positive and humbling, highlighting the value of hearing directly from those with lived experience.
Engagement and Outcomes
One young person stands out as a particularly inspiring example of the impact of involvement in the eXtreme group. She has been part of Investing in Children (IiC) for nine years, during which time she has taken part in a wide range of projects and opportunities.
After turning 25, she continued her journey as a volunteer and has since successfully progressed into paid employment — a fantastic achievement that reflects her dedication, growth, and confidence.
