Apple Trees Short Break Service
Run by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, Apple Trees offers short breaks for disabled children and young people up to the age of 18. Support can be a few hours a week with a support worker or overnight stays in a purpose-built home in Blackburn. Children get new experiences and friendships. Families get time to recharge.
Aycliffe Secure Centre
Durham County Council’s secure children’s home cares for up to 38 young people aged 10 to 18, many with complex needs. Its mission is to be a safe, caring home and school where every young person is encouraged to be the best they can be. Wellbeing and a successful return to the community are at the heart of its work.
CAMHS North Durham Getting More Help Service
Part of Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust’s mental health service for children and young people. “Getting More Help” comes from the THRIVE framework, which CAMHS in Durham adopted in 2023. The team works with children and young people in North Durham who need more intensive, specialist support. I couldn’t find a page for this team specifically, so it’s worth checking this one with them.
Durham County Council Family Hubs (North, East and South)
Durham’s Family Hubs bring support for families together in one place, from pregnancy through to young adulthood. Sessions range from baby and toddler groups and feeding support to speech and language help and parenting workshops. They also offer SEND advice, youth groups and employment support through DurhamWorks.
Durham County Council Fostering Service
The service recruits, trains and supports foster carers who give children and young people in County Durham a stable, caring home. Ofsted has praised it in the past for listening to young people and involving them in how the service runs.
Durham County Council Independent Reviewing Officer Quality and Review Team
Independent Reviewing Officers chair reviews for children in care. They make sure each child’s care plan meets their needs and that their wishes and feelings are heard and acted on.
