LGBTQIA+

Overview

This group supports children and young people who identify as LGBTQIA+ to have a voice in shaping and improving services, as well as enhancing support for LGBTQIA+ young people. A year ago, the group identified a need to create a survival guide to support LGBTQIA+ children and young people, as it can be difficult to find clear and reliable information online.

Funding Source

This project is proudly funded by the IiC Foundation to create a ‘survival guide’ designed to support and empower LGBTQIA+ children and young people. Shaped by the voices and experiences of the group, the guide aims to provide accessible, trusted information in one place.

Thanks to additional funding from The Key, the group celebrated the launch of the guide at Durham Pride on Saturday 30 May 2026 — a meaningful opportunity to share their work and raise awareness within the wider community.

Impact

One of the most significant outcomes of this project has been the creation of the guide itself, and the positive difference it is set to make in the lives of children and young people. Designed with their needs in mind, the guide will provide vital support, helping LGBTQIA+ young people feel informed, empowered, and less alone.

Engagement & Outcomes

Over the past year, the group has been researching, gathering information and bringing the guide to life. They connected with a range of support groups across the North East to capture diverse perspectives from young people, sharing their ideas and shaping the content together.

The guide is now complete and has been launched, making it a valuable and accessible resource for LGBTQIA+ children and young people, as well as those who support them.

Recent Activity and Progress

Over the past three meetings, the group has visited a range of support organisations across the North East, including Hart Gables, The Freedom Zone and Consett Churches. At each visit, young people were invited to share their feedback on the guide, offering ideas, suggestions and recommendations for improvement.

This valuable input was carefully considered and incorporated, helping to shape and strengthen the content. As a result, the group has created a final guide that truly reflects the voices and experiences of LGBTQIA+ young people.
